Is R&B Having an Identity Crisis?

Apr 9 2012, 1:39 PM ET 27 Recent comments from musicians show anxiety about the genre’s popularity—and about black artists’ place in it.

The-Dream performs in Charlotte, N.C. AP Images

The-Dream has written dance-pop hits for the likes of Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Mariah Carey, but his solo career has largely been about recording R&B. So he knows a thing or two about the phenomenon he recently complained about in the pages of The Guardian. “What’s crazy is that blacks can’t do soul records any more,” he said. “We love Adele singing it, but Beyoncé singing it? No, the tempo’s too slow, gimme the club hit. Now the blacks in America are responsible for the pop records, and everybody else is singing soulful records. It’s weird to me. We’re pigeonholed over there.”

What’s striking, though, is that only a few days later, Stephin Merritt—singer for the decidedly un-club-friendly, un-R&B indie-pop act The Magnetic Fields—voiced similar concerns to LA Weekly. “I like Adele, though I have some reservations about why people like her,” Merritt said. “She really has a lovely voice, but I only get suspicious when people get excited about British people who sound like American black people.”"Basically she sounds like Anita Baker,” Merritt continued. “And people are not, you know, wild and crazy about Anita Baker. And I think about the whole, with the racism, when people love when British people sound like American black people.”

Both remarks sparked criticism. Some questioned The-Dream’s own role in the state of soul, while others charged Merritt with hypocrisy (he’s faced accusations of racism, himself). And plenty of Adele fans were quick to argue that the singer’s success comes from the quality of her music and the fact that it sounds different from anything else on radio. What’s inarguable, though, is that the two men’s statements speak to larger, widespread anxiety about the state of modern R&B—and black peoples’ place in it.

It’s not that there are no new black R&B artists. Singers such as Jazmine Sullivan, whom Adele beat out for Best New Artist at the 2009 Grammys, offer music just as soulful and introspective only with a minuscule fraction of Adele’s fame. The same can be said about a gifted vocalist like Ledisi or Miguel. And it remains to be seen whether a newcomer like Stacy Barthe will enjoy Adele’s success or turn out to be the Sharon Jones to her Amy Winehouse.

The problem, many black R&B artists say, is the way that in-vogue club pop sounds have infiltrated the genre they love. So-called R&B radio stations play music that, save for tracks from the likes of Trey Songz or Mary J. Blige, aren’t actually R&B—yet get labeled as such because black artists are singing on them: tunes like Drake and Rihanna’s “Take Care” or Usher’s “Climax” (which Usher calls “electro soul,” whatever that means). Earlier this year, Boyz II Men, who at their peak scored several megahits off their soulful tracks, made this point. On the state of contemporary R&B, member Shawn Stockman said, “It’s taken a step to what I think really isn’t R&B. It sounds more electro pop, I think the only reason people call it R&B is cos black folks are singing it.”

In 2010, Erykah Badu turned off her radio and took to Twitter to complain as well about the “electro pop” turn R&B has taken, writing: “They playd 6 in a row today- #pop techno songs back to back with so called r&b and rap artists… on the [hip-hop] station. Where I been? Like I said, how y’all gone STAND by and let our music turn into pop techno cornball ass music?”

She went on: “I like the idea of no distinction in race when it comes 2 music, but SOULkeepers, U dont give up the boom bip and the hump 4 the payday.”

Trey Songz, one of the few successful artists where the R&B tag is actually applicable, echoed Badu’s thoughts in an interview with the Power 105.1 radio show, “The Breakfast Club.” “The success of crossover is something we all want to attain, but the route to get there is what’s important to me,” Trey said. As for why so many of his peers have changed their sound, he acknowledges that it was “the easy thing to do right now to get a hit.” Indeed, Trey noted that, “It’s not cool to be an R&B singer no more.”

As a child of the ’80s, Trey can remember when it was cool and how soul singers didn’t have to go so left to enjoy certain successes. He said he could recall “a time that Luther Vandross could sell out Madison Square Garden four nights straight with straight soul music and be in the top 100, but that’s not what it is right now.”On that same show this week, another R&B artist, Dawn Richard (Danity Kane, Diddy-Dirty Money), spoke about trying to bring innovation to the genre but opting to start off independently releasing her music. It seems label reps would tell her they liked what they heard, but found the sound too risky to offer a record deal.

Rationalizing their ambivalence, Richard asked: “Why would you take a risk on a brown girl? There’s no brown girl considered pretty right now poppin’ in the game. A dark skinned game. Kelly Rowland? There are, but I’m talking about in that crossover world. They’re not allowing it.”

What has been allowed, though, is what’s selling on radio. The traditional notion of R&B may not be dead, but it does seem destined to live in obscurity until popular tastes change again. As Badu put it, “I love house and techno as a side dish. But now it’s served as the main course AND that’s ALL u gone get.”

The collective gasp you heard halfway through the Grammy Awards broadcast on Sunday night was from the soul music community, aghast over what they had just witnessed. People were already getting a little ticky on Facebook and Twitter as performance after performance came forward on Sunday night with very little nod to soul, gospel or even jazz music. Classic rock fans were in nirvana (no pun intended) as great bands like the Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, a reunited Beach Boys and even the Beatles (through two performances by Paul McCartney) dominated the stage with fine performances. And the Grammys got it 100% right as Adele’s brilliant 21 received every award possible. Adele displays what is best in popular music and in 2011 she brilliantly culled elements of rock, country, folk and even some R&B into a cohesive whole that we’ll be talking about for years. But on a night when soul music legend Diana Ross was to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award, the current, vibrant form of her genre was completely ignored, with soul only receiving peripheral, historical half-nods in mini-tributes to Whitney Houston and Etta James.

Then, at that midway point of the show, insult was added to the perceived injury as the award for Best R&B Album was presented. The category had an unusually strong group of nominees this year: Ledisi is a singular voice, and while nominated in prior years she hasn’t yet won a much deserved Grammy. Kelly Price swept the SoulTracks awards in December for good reason: Her self-titled album was simply glorious. Former teen star El DeBarge received a welcome Second Chance in the past year with the redemptive album of the same name. And R. Kelly threw his longtime critics (including me) a curve by showing he had the talent to make memorable music even on someone else’s turf. Oh yes, and there was also Chris Brown, whose nomination in the category was like the old Sesame Street song “One of these things is not like the others.” While a fine dancer, as a vocal artist he is not in the same league as Ledisi, Price or DeBarge, nor was his album in any way properly categorized with the others. But soul fans let the odd nomination grouping roll right off us, because, of course, there was no way Brown would win…until he did. The response in Twitterland was swift and furious. And while everyone has his or her own tastes, thousands of postings wondered aloud under what critical criteria could this result happen, except a simple adoption of the Soundscan sales numbers.

That Brown was nominated in the same category as Ledisi and Price – and that he won – appeared to support the “conspiracy theory” of some music fans who frequently complain that the Grammys just don’t understand the breadth of black music. And it didn’t help that on this same night Diana Ross received only fleeting recognition for her Lifetime award while Brown and Rihanna performed not once but multiple times.

Since the Milli Vanilli fiasco, an embarrassed Grammy committee has been careful to choose the Best New Artist each year based on real artistic merit, regardless of popularity. That’s how the talented Esperanza Spalding won last year and folkster Bon Iver took the award this year. But in the R&B album category, year after year the awards simply play out like the Billboard charts – as if the voters never even listened to the nominated albums. And, when combined with the choice of performances for the evening, it would not be surprising if rock or country music fans left the Grammys with the impression that the state of black music today is epitomized by Chris Brown, Rihanna and the perplexing, insulting Nicki Minaj.

I’m not sure whether it is worse to be ignored or misrepresented, but the many talented artists we cover on SoulTracks would be justified in feeling both slaps from the Grammy Awards this year. On the sacred evening when the music industry celebrates its diversity, talent and character, and on a stage full of great rock and country performers whose styles were heavily influenced by jazz, the black church and rhythm & blues, it was frustrating to see the status of those varied styles in 2012 demonstrated in a minimalized, one-dimensional manner that doesn’t move much beyond hip-hop. But, sadly, that’s exactly what we received on Sunday. And once it all sank in, that collective gasp after the Best R&B award slowly turned to disappointment — disappointment that on the same night that a beautiful woman with a once-in-a-generation voice was honored, the influential, seminal forms of American music that were the basis of her training now appear to have to prove themselves to the music establishment all over again.

Biography

While for those with short memories it may be difficult to think of Whitney Houston outside of her regular starring role in the tabloids during the 21st Century, soul music fans certainly remember when she arrived in 1984 as a talented, stunningly beautiful young vocalist who appeared to have the whole package. She largely delivered on the promise over the next decade and a half, becoming perhaps the most influential female singer of her generation (its easy to forget that Mariah Carey was once viewed as Whitney Part II) and one of the biggest popular music performers of all time.

Born in 1963 as the daughter of singer Cissy Houston, Whitney was performing by the time she was a teen and was discovered by A&R man Gerry Griffith and signed as a solo singer at age 20 by Arista President Clive Davis. Her first recording was a less-than-inspiring duet with an aging Teddy Pendergrass called “Hold Me,” but it was her 1985 debut album and the Kashif-produced ”You Give Good Love” that made her a star. Her big, bright voice was an incredible instrument and it was nearly impossible to avoid gaping at her breathtaking physical beauty. Davis modeled her for crossover success, delivering to her a series of instantly likeable pop-oriented singles that, one after another, shot to the top of the charts. Arista also fashioned a public relations campaign that painted her as a spiritually grounded, nearly perfect pop princess – an almost holographic caricature of every woman’s friend and every man’s dream that was impossible to live up to or sustain.

Houston’s self-titled album became the biggest selling female debut of all-time, and she immediately moved near the top of the pop music royalty. Her follow-up album, Whitney, continued the ascension, boasting four more #1 pop hits (alternating between bright dance tunes and formulaic ballads that were notable only for her always-solid vocal performance) and solidifying her position as an artist who appeared incapable of slipping. By now it was clear that Houston was largely a singles artist – her albums were simply a collection of melodic cuts from a number of producers with no particular cohesiveness – but she made those singles her own and sang the heck out of them.

Houston tried to create an ever-so-slightly hipper sound on her third disc, 1990′s I’m Your Baby Tonight, working with hot young producer Babyface. However, expectations had grown so artificially high that the disc was considered a disappointment because it only spawned two number one hits, the title track and a remake of Linda Clifford’s “All The Man I Need.” She recovered on the charts the next year with her version of the “Star Spangled Banner,” which was released around the time of the beginning of the Gulf War (and which topped the chart again after 9/11).

Houston’s transition from singer to actress began with 1992′s The Bodyguard, a by-the-numbers movie that teamed the biggest singer in the world with the biggest actor in the world, Kevin Costner. It was a smash, and was only surpassed in notoriety by the uber-popular soundtrack and Houston’s cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” a show-stopping vocal performance that became the biggest hit of Houston’s career and one of the best selling singles of all time. The second single, the David Foster-penned “I Have Nothing,” was perhaps even better, and also hit #1. She followed The Bodyguard with two more movies and soundtracks, Waiting to Exhale and The Preacher’s Wife, each of which spawned hits but failed to reach the popularity of its predecessor.

With her movie career over, Houston came back to music in 1998 with My Love Is Your Love, her most ambitious and urban sounding album. While it didn’t meet the sales of her earlier albums (it was her first disc to fail to hit the top 10), it was a refreshing change and included a some very memorable songs, including the reggae-influenced title cut (courtesy of Wyclef Jean) and the edgy “It’s Not Right But It’s Okay.” She also ventured back into big ballad territory and to the top of the charts on her #1 duet with Mariah Carey, “When You Believe.”

Unfortunately, around this time Houston’s life appeared to be unraveling, with legal problems, marital issues with husband Bobby Brown, erratic public behavior, scary weight loss and drug problems creating for her a regular front page column in the tabloids that continued until her death. These personal travails tended to overshadow her enjoyable 2001 release Just Whitney and her 2003 Christmas album. The latter album also showed the first signs of a growing roughness in her voice, which appeared to fall short of the crystalline tones of her earlier performances but which also gave new character.

In 2008, Houston began working on her “comeback” album I Look to You, working with such current R&B luminaries as R Kelly, Stargate, Akon and Tricky Stewart. The title cut hit radio in the Summer of 2009 with some success, but it was the Alicia Keys-penned follow up track, “Million Dollar Bill,” that made radio take notice. While the disc showed that Houston had lost some of her overpowering vocal skills, it was nonetheless a welcome and worthwhile return for her.

She followed the album with her “Nothing But Love” tour, which, unfortunately, showed Houston struggling as a singer in ways her fans had never before seen. The tour was largely criticized and ended early. Houston voluntarily entered rehab for dependencies in 2011. She died suddenly on February 11, 2012 in Beverly Hills.

While her personal life unfortunately took front and center during the last decade and a half of her life, it should not make soul music lovers forget the immense talent that Houston brought to a quarter century of music. And though her albums (especially her early work) were too often dominated by safe, formulaic ballads, her performances always rose above the material with which she she worked and resulted in a career full of memorable moments. She was considered by many as the voice of her generation, and it is for that voice that she will always be remembered.
