Wed Sep 13th - 1995
Jazz Cafe , London
scene of the greatest Neo Soul gig in my life - ever !
D Angelo - LIVE …in all his box fresh beauty !
Ladies - dont bother make enquiry re what his six pack was like !…or what he wore..
cos my eyes were shut TIGHT so as to divert extra capability to my other senses….
Feel (as in bass) , Touch ( as in fender rhodes riding my nerve ends) and Smell (as in in clearing of my nasal passages caused by excessive neck nudging)
As I listened to this colossal talent unleash tracks from his monumental debut album, I wished I’d tucked a tape machine somewhere about my person !
(only later did I learn a that a live cd released in japan existed) . He performed like a 20 year music business veteran, backed by three divas including Vertical Hold’s Angie Stone and showcased his distinctive ‘old skool / jeep bass’ style of music.
The packed out venue of hyped up fans and mesmerized industry admirers sung along word for word to tunes like ‘Browne Sugar’ , ‘Lady’ and ‘Shit, Damn, Mother****er’ to prove how well they knew the lyrics of the record , despite it only being released barely three months earlier.
Dont agree…listen to the live cd !
