By its very nature, soul music is a changeable thing. The form emerged from the streets of Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia and Memphis, and found worldwide acclaim in the early ’60s. It grew more funky and psychedelic as times changed, and even transformed into disco for a while. Much like jazz that came before it, this African-American art form is challenged to maintain its identity and its audience in this 21st century era.
In the SXSW music panel Meet the New Soul – Same as the Old Soul?, a distinguished group of speakers will look at the past and the future of the genre of soul. Moderator Judy Tint will ask questions of Claudette Robinson, the First Lady of Motown, Bob Davis, founder of Soul-Patrol.com, Rhymefest, Kanye collaborator and author of Jesus Walks, and legendary musician Al Kooper. The perspectives that this group bring to the topic guarantee a compelling panel.
